India Lifts Wheat Export Ban Amid Global Supply Pressures

The Indian government has lifted its year-long ban on wheat exports, allowing the country to resume shipments of the grain. The decision comes as India emerges as a surplus producer of wheat, with the US Department of Agriculture forecasting domestic stockpiles to end the 2026-27 season at a record level.

The ban was imposed in 2022 following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which disrupted global wheat supplies and sent prices skyrocketing. However, India's last wheat harvest reached an all-time high of 120.6 million tons, indicating a significant increase in production.

The government has also allowed exports of wheat flour and other products such as maida and semolina. This move is expected to ease supply pressures in import-dependent countries across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
