India Lifts Wheat Export Ban Amid Record-Setting Production

The Indian government has lifted its ban on exporting wheat and its products, effective immediately. This decision aims to boost farmers' income by allowing them to export their surplus wheat amid depressed domestic prices.

In May 2022, India banned wheat exports due to rising domestic prices. However, this year's production has been a record-breaking 120.65 million tonnes, with an additional 49 million tonnes in buffer stock. The government allowed the export of 50 lakh tonnes of wheat and 10 lakh tonnes of wheat products earlier this year.

Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra stated that the decision to lift the ban is in the interest of farmers. He mentioned that the domestic market prices will increase, encouraging good sowing in the coming rabi season and resulting in better prices for farmers. Chopra also assured that there is adequate stock available to meet demand and control consumer prices.
