India Lifts Wheat Export Ban to Boost Farmer Returns
The Indian government has lifted its export ban on wheat and its products with immediate effect. The move aims to boost farmers' income amid depressed domestic prices, according to a notification issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade.
In May 2022, India banned wheat exports as part of measures to control rising domestic prices. However, early this year, the government allowed the export of 50 lakh tonnes of wheat and 10 lakh tonnes of wheat products.
India is the world's second-largest wheat producer. Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra stated that the export ban has been lifted in the interest of farmers and to increase domestic market prices.
