India Proves Resilience Amid Global Energy Challenges
India's economy has demonstrated remarkable resilience in the face of global energy security challenges. The country achieved a real GDP growth rate of 7.8% in Q1 FY27, despite being hit by a severe West Asian conflict and disruption around the Strait of Hormuz.
The crisis would have been disastrous for any economy reliant on imported crude oil, but India's diversified procurement strategy proved to be a critical shock absorber. The country was able to substantially alter its sourcing map within days of the disruption, with 70% of crude imports arriving through routes outside Hormuz by March 2026.
India sourced crude from 40 countries, up from 27 in 2006-07, and secured additional supplies from the UAE, Venezuela, and other producers. Russian crude accounted for roughly half of India's March imports, while supplies from the Middle East fell sharply.
