India Raises MSP for Major Rabi Crops Amid Push for Pulse and Oilseed Cultivation
The Indian government has approved significant increases in the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for Rabi crops, which include safflower, mustard, lentil, and wheat. The increase aims to provide remunerative prices for farmers growing these crops.
The MSP for safflower received the biggest hike at Rs 675 per quintal, followed by rapeseed and mustard with a raise of Rs 413 per quintal each. Lentils will get an increase of Rs 390 per quintal.
The government has highlighted the importance of encouraging farmers to cultivate crops beyond cereals, particularly pulses and oilseeds, by offering higher MSPs for these crops. The Centre also pointed out that there has been a significant increase in the procurement of Rabi crops over the years, with wheat procurement rising from 2,254 LMT during 2004-05 to 2013-14 to 3,715 LMT during 2014-15 to 2025-26.
