India Refines Global Jewellery Market with Technological Edge
India's relationship with gold is often seen as one of consumption, with the country importing around 700 to 800 tonnes every year. However, this view overlooks India's true global influence in the industry.
The country holds little to no domestic gold mines and its influence stems from refining, designing, and dominating the global market. India accounts for nearly 15 per cent of total global gold demand and roughly 28 per cent of global jewellery demand.
India's annual gold import bill often hovers around $59 billion, making bullion one of the largest components of the nation's import balance alongside crude oil. Rather than viewing this outflow as an economic cost, the industry sees raw gold as a vital input for a massive, export-focused manufacturing engine.
The country processes over 90 per cent of the world's cut and polished diamonds by volume, representing roughly a quarter of global diamond exports. Indian manufacturers are adopting digital traceability tools, blockchain verification, and international quality certifications to meet strict international standards.
