India Reopens Wheat Exports Amid Global Supply Concerns

India has lifted its ban on wheat exports, allowing the country to contribute to global supply stability. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade issued Notification No. 35/2026-27 on August 24, reclassifying wheat and wheat flour exports as 'Free', effectively ending a ban that had been in place since May 2022.

The decision comes after India's agricultural ministry estimated the 2024-25 wheat harvest at approximately 115.3 million metric tonnes, with industry projections for the 2025-26 crop year hovering around 110 million tonnes.

India's policymakers emphasized that domestic supply remains more than adequate, and that the export liberalization is designed to benefit farmers through better price realization while also contributing to global supply stability.
