India Secures Energy Supremacy with Mauritius Supply Pact
India has secured its position as a major energy security provider in the Indian Ocean region after signing a five-year long-term supply agreement with Mauritius. The deal, signed during Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri's visit to the island nation, will see Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) supply refined petroleum products to Mauritius.
The pact provides a shield against price volatility for Mauritius, ensuring the country's energy security. This is the first long-term supply agreement concluded by an Indian PSU oil marketing company outside South Asia in recent years.
India has emerged as a significant global refining hub, with an annual output of 267 MMT of refined petroleum products across 23 refineries, making it a net exporter of refined products. The country already meets the petroleum demand of Nepal and Bhutan and supplies substantial quantities to other countries in the region.
