India Seeks US LPG Amid Disrupted Middle Eastern Supplies
India's state-owned LPG importers have issued a massive tender for 2.75 million metric tons of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from the United States, as Middle Eastern supplies falter. The tender, which remains valid until October 22, requests four very large gas carrier shipments per month, each containing 46,000 tons of LPG evenly divided between propane and butane.
The deliveries are scheduled for 2027, with one additional cargo requested on a free-on-board basis. This move comes as India, the world's second-largest LPG importer after China, seeks to mitigate disruptions in fuel supplies caused by the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran, which began in late February.
India Oil, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum are jointly issuing the tender, reflecting the country's reliance on imported LPG. In 2025, about 90% of India's 21.85 million metric tons of LPG imports came from the Middle East, with imports making up roughly 66% of the country's total LPG consumption.
