India Sets New MSPs for Six Rabi Crops, Wheat Sees Modest Hike
The Union Cabinet approved higher Minimum Support Prices (MSPs) for six rabi crops in India's 2027-28 marketing season, with wheat receiving the smallest increase of just Rs 25 per quintal.
This represents a sharp slowdown from last year's Rs 160 per quintal hike to Rs 2,585. Wheat's MSP has now reached Rs 2,610 per quintal, implying an expected margin of 106% over production cost, which stands at Rs 1,264 per quintal.
The Cabinet gave larger increases to oilseeds and pulses, with safflower seeing a significant jump of Rs 675 to Rs 7,215 per quintal, the largest among all six crops. Rapeseed and mustard seed rose by Rs 413 to Rs 6,613 per quintal, while masur (lentil) saw a steeper rise of Rs 390 to Rs 7,390 per quintal.
