India Shifts Oil Imports Outside Strait of Hormuz Amid Regional Tensions
India's crude oil imports have seen a significant shift, with over 70% of the country's supply now coming from outside the Strait of Hormuz. According to Joint Secretary Sujata Sharma, India's crude supply is secure and exceeds what normally would have arrived through the Strait. This change has been made possible by procuring crude oil from 40 countries, with Oil marketing companies securing various cargos through different sources.
The country's gas companies have also managed to procure LNG cargoes from new sources, with two shipments currently en route to India. The government remains committed to the welfare of Indian nationals living in GCC and West Asian countries, with all embassies in regular contact with community members.
According to Rajesh Kumar Sinha, Special Secretary in Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, 28 Indian flag vessels with 778 Indian Seafarers are operating in the Persian Gulf. The government is actively monitoring these vessels and crew for their safety and security, working closely with authorities, Ship Managers, and Recruitment Agencies to ensure assistance when needed.
