India Stocks Slide Amid Oil Price Rise and Expiry Jitters
Indian stocks took a hit as Brent crude prices hovered around $92.5 per barrel due to renewed Middle East tensions, and traders were also bracing for the Nifty 50's first monthly derivatives expiry under India's new closing auction session.
The country imports most of its crude oil, making it vulnerable to higher energy prices that can push up inflation and pressure corporate margins.
Qode Advisors warned that a thin auction book on expiry days can lead to larger-than-expected end-of-day index moves, affecting derivatives settlement and potentially leading to jumpier pricing in short-dated Nifty options.
The market structure change, which sets the official closing print for many stocks linked to futures and options, is also contributing to the volatility.
Additionally, traders are watching a repeat setup on August 31st when an MSCI index rebalancing will concentrate benchmark-tracking flows into the same closing window.
