India to Implement Global Standard for Gas Pipeline Coatings

The Indian government is working on implementing an internationally recognized quality standard for friction-reduction coatings used inside steel gas pipelines to improve efficiency and durability of the country's gas transportation network.

This move comes as India accelerates its natural gas pipeline expansion amidst heightened energy security concerns following the West Asia war. The Centre aims to increase the share of natural gas in the energy mix to 15% by 2030 from about 6.5%, driven by wider adoption of piped natural gas and greater use of gas in long-haul transport.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has proposed adopting ISO 15741:2016 as an Indian Standard, providing a uniform benchmark for internal coatings used in steel gas transmission pipelines.
