India Unveils LNG-Powered Train as Part of Rail Modernization Efforts
India's railway network has taken another step towards modernization and sustainability. The country has launched its first liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered train, part of efforts to reduce diesel consumption and emissions. The new train is expected to contribute significantly to environmental protection and cleaner rail operations.
The LNG-powered train was introduced as part of a larger development package valued at ₹1,472 crore (approximately US$176.5 million). The project includes various infrastructure upgrades such as signalling improvements under the Kavach safety system, doubling of rail lines on certain routes, and the construction of a new maintenance facility for high-capacity freight locomotives.
Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah highlighted the importance of these initiatives in reducing diesel consumption and promoting cleaner transport operations. He noted that Indian Railways had reduced diesel consumption from 293 crore litres in 2015-16 to 108 crore litres in 2024-25, with electrification reaching 99.6% of the network.
