Indian Government Cuts Windfall Tax on Petroleum Exports Amid Volatile Crude Prices
The Indian government has announced a reduction in windfall tax on petroleum product exports, effective August 15. The duty on diesel exports has been cut from Rs 25.5 per litre to Rs 24 per litre, and export duty on petrol has been reduced from Rs 3.5 per litre to zero. Tax on aviation turbine fuel has also been lowered.
The windfall tax was first introduced in July 2022 when crude oil prices were rising sharply. It is designed to capture extraordinary gains earned by oil producers and exporters when international prices rise sharply. The current geopolitical tensions have kept crude oil prices volatile, with Brent crude remaining around USD 87 per barrel.
Despite the reduction in windfall tax, it does not directly mean cheaper petrol or diesel for consumers. Retail fuel prices in India are influenced by several factors and are not automatically reduced whenever the windfall tax changes. The main impact is on exporters and oil companies that face lower duties on their overseas sales.
