Indian Government Raises Minimum Support Prices for Rabi Crops
The Indian government has approved an increase in Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for all mandated rabi crops for the marketing season 2027-28. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, made this decision.
The MSP of wheat was raised to Rs 2,610 per quintal from Rs 2,585, an increase of Rs 25. Barley MSP has been increased to Rs 2,286 per quintal from Rs 2,150 in the previous year.
Among pulses, the MSP of gram has been increased by Rs 83 to Rs 5,958 per quintal from Rs 5,875. The MSP of masur (lentil) has gone up by Rs 390 to Rs 7,390 per quintal from Rs 7,000.
The Commission for Agricultural Costs & Prices (CACP) recommends MSPs to incentivise farmers to adopt modern technology and raise productivity. The government takes the final decision on the level of MSPs after considering the CACP's recommendations.
