Indian Railways Taps LNG to Cut Diesel Emissions
The Indian Railways has introduced its first train capable of running on liquefied natural gas (LNG) to reduce emissions and cut diesel consumption. The eight-coach, non-air-conditioned DEMU (Diesel Electric Multiple Unit) train was launched from Sabarmati station in Gujarat and can operate using a combination of 40% LNG and 60% diesel. Dedicated fuel controls, LNG storage, gas-leak detection, and safety systems have been installed on the train to ensure safe operation.
The Railways plans to convert 10 Driving Power Cars under an existing contract, with two converted DPCs already completing 2,000-kilometre field trials each. The conversion is aimed at keeping existing DEMU assets operational while reducing diesel consumption.
