The Indian stock market declined for a third consecutive session on Wednesday, September 2, due to renewed fighting in the Middle East and elevated crude oil prices. The benchmark indices broke below key levels, with the Nifty 50 closing 0.59% lower at 23,914 and the Sensex ending 0.62% lower at 76,469.

The selling pressure extended to the broader market, with the Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 declining 0.53% and 0.37%, respectively. The escalation of the conflict between Iran and the US added further pressure to crude oil prices, with Brent crude hovering near its highest level in almost six weeks.

Analysts see further downside for the Nifty, with Rupak De, Senior Technical Analyst at LKP Securities, stating that the index's breakdown from a rising channel indicates sustained selling pressure. He noted that the weakness prevailed throughout the day, despite an intraday recovery, and that a sell-on-rise strategy may remain the preferred approach as long as the index remains below 24,000.

Vatsal Bhuva, Technical Analyst at LKP Securities, also highlighted that the Bank Nifty remains weak, trading below its crucial 20 DMA and 200 DMA. He stated that immediate support is placed at 57,000, while resistance is seen at 57,600, followed by the crucial 58,000 level.

Global bond yields have reached multi-year highs due to rising crude prices, with traders increasing bets that central banks could raise interest rates to contain inflation. The heightened volatility and global uncertainty are expected to continue in the short term, with analysts advising investors to maintain a cautious stance and keep position sizes light.
