Indian Stock Market Declines as Crude Oil Prices Soar
The Indian stock market continued its decline on Tuesday, with both the Sensex and Nifty indices trading near six-month lows. The Sensex was down 614.27 points, or 0.84 percent at 72,157.45, while the Nifty declined 181.20 points, or 0.8 percent to 22,599.05.
The decline in the market can be attributed to several key factors, including a rise in Brent crude prices, which traded 1.74 percent higher at USD 107.1 per barrel. Higher oil prices are negative for India, as they can stoke inflation, widen the import bill and squeeze growth and corporate margins.
Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, stated that 'Indian equities opened on a cautious note and have continued to weaken, extending the recent downtrend as elevated crude oil prices... weigh on risk appetite.'
