Indian Stock Market Falls Amid Higher Crude Oil Prices and Geopolitical Uncertainties
The Indian stock market suffered losses on Wednesday due to higher crude oil prices and geopolitical uncertainties. The benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty declined by 0.45% and 0.46%, respectively, with the latter falling below 24,050.
Rising crude oil prices are a major concern as Brent crude traded 0.67% higher at $91.63 per barrel. Analysts attribute this increase to renewed concerns over a prolonged disruption to energy supplies due to the expiry of the temporary US-Iran ceasefire without any meaningful diplomatic breakthrough.
The Nifty sectoral indices declined across various sectors, except for auto, IT, and pharma. Financial stocks fell 0.5%, while the IT index gained 0.8% after a decline in the last three sessions.
Experts point to the combination of higher crude prices and appreciating bond yields as key factors behind the market's decline. Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, notes that this has triggered a broad risk-off mood across global financial markets.
