Indian Stocks Fall Amid Oil Price Spike as Iran-US Tensions Escalate

The Indian stock market traded lower on Tuesday amid concerns over potential disruptions to energy supplies due to escalating tensions between Iran and the US. The Sensex declined by 365 points or 0.47% to 77,362, while the Nifty traded 76 points or 0.31% lower at 24,211. The losses were led by the Nifty IT sector, which slumped more than 1%. Analysts pointed out that the rise in Brent crude prices above $91 a barrel and the increase in US 10-year Treasury yields could weigh on equities in the near term.

The spike in oil prices was triggered by reports of Iran's indication that it could adopt a more offensive posture, as well as US President Donald Trump's ruling out an extension to the ceasefire arrangement. Brent crude rose 0.60% from the previous close to trade above $91 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate crude gained more than 1% to $85.37 a barrel.

Despite these concerns, analysts remain optimistic about the Indian economy's resilience and the potential for an earnings growth turnaround. Domestic institutional investors may step in to buy significant dips, while retail investors can use market declines to accumulate quality stocks for the long term. However, heightened geopolitical tensions are likely to keep markets volatile.
