Indian Traders' Favorite Instrument: Why XAU/USD Matters Globally
The XAU/USD pair, which measures one troy ounce of gold priced in US dollars, has become a crucial instrument for traders globally, including those from India. This is not just because gold is a store of value in India, but also due to its role as a global market signal that reflects dollar strength, geopolitical stress, and risk appetite.
Gold trades continuously on international markets, making the XAU/USD price a reflection of activity across multiple sessions throughout the day. The London and New York sessions produce the highest volume and tightest spreads, making them the most relevant windows for active traders.
The US dollar is the single most important variable driving gold's price movements, as a stronger dollar makes gold more expensive for holders of other currencies, suppressing demand and pushing the XAU/USD price lower. A weaker dollar has the opposite effect. Real interest rates are also a major driver, with gold becoming relatively more attractive when real rates fall or turn negative.
Safe-haven demand is the third key driver, visible during acute market stress. When geopolitical uncertainty rises sharply, equity markets sell off, or financial system stability comes into question, capital flows into gold regardless of dollar or rate dynamics.
