India's Consumer-Durable Prices Set to Rise Again on October 1
India's consumer-durable prices are set to rise again on October 1, with air-conditioner (AC) prices expected to increase by 5-8% and other items potentially becoming 3-4% costlier. The price hike is attributed to increased global input costs, including a sharp rise in copper prices of 34%, resin by 17%, steel by 24%, and aluminium by 16%. This marks the third round of consumer-durable price hikes in India this year, with cumulative increases reaching up to 16-18%.
The prolonged West Asia crisis has intensified global input cost pressures on Indian manufacturers. Copper, aluminium, steel, and petrochemical-based materials are globally traded commodities, making Indian manufacturers vulnerable to international price movements. The ongoing geopolitical situation has disrupted supply chains, leading to port delays of up to 30 days, burdening costs for companies reliant on imported components.
Some manufacturers have already implemented or announced price increases, with Blue Star having raised AC prices by 8%. Haier India plans to boost room air-conditioner prices by around 5% from October 1 and has indicated 2-3% increases for other products. The industry expects producers and retailers to use financing schemes, bundled products, and discounts to cater to festive demand.
