India's Edible Oil Sector Faces Rising Demand and Import Vulnerability

India's edible oil sector is facing a complex set of challenges as demand surges in tandem with economic growth. According to Bhavna Shah, Vice President of the Indian Vegetable Oil Producers' Association, India's structural demand for edible oils remains strong, but the country must focus on improving domestic oilseed productivity and strengthening supply-chain resilience to reduce long-term import vulnerability.

Shah notes that while India's GDP growth is projected at 7.4 percent in FY26, with services leading the surge, the country's edible oil demand dynamics are now normalized, with consumption growth below 2 percent annually on a per capita basis. Urban demand remains relatively resilient, driven by rising disposable incomes and premiumisation trends, but rural demand is more sensitive to food inflation and monsoon outcomes.

The biggest concern for India's edible oil supply chain is the increasing interconnectedness of risks across commodities, energy, logistics, and agriculture. Shah identifies four key risk transmission channels: energy-linked inflation, climate risk, global biofuel diversion, and supply chain fragility. She emphasizes that improving seed technology, irrigation efficiency, extension services, and mechanisation can deliver more sustainable gains in oilseed productivity.

India's import dependence is locked at 55-60 percent, and while the country has made progress in diversifying its import origins, complete self-sufficiency is unlikely in the foreseeable future. The Oil Palm Mission aims to raise palm oil availability to 1.2 MMT by 2030, but Shah believes this target remains ambitious due to execution challenges and long-gestation periods.
