India's First LNG-Diesel Dual-Fuel DEMU Train Launches Today in Gujarat

India's first LNG-diesel dual-fuel DEMU train is set to launch today from Sabarmati railway station in Gujarat. The train, operated by the Ahmedabad Division of Western Railway, uses a dual-fuel system that allows its engine to run on both liquefied natural gas (LNG) and diesel.

The technology aims to reduce diesel consumption while promoting cleaner alternative fuels for Indian Railways. According to estimates, the use of LNG can replace up to 40% of diesel consumption.

Each converted power car is fitted with an LNG tank holding approximately 950-1,000 kg of usable LNG. The engine can switch between the two fuels depending on availability, ensuring continuous operations even when LNG is not available.
