India's First LNG-Diesel Dual-Fuel Train Hits the Tracks
Indian Railways has taken a significant step towards reducing its reliance on traditional diesel engines by unveiling its first LNG-diesel dual-fuel train in Sabarmati, Gujarat. The train, classified as a Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU), can operate on both liquefied natural gas (LNG) and diesel fuel, allowing the engine to switch between fuels based on operational needs and fuel availability.
This dual-fuel capability aims to enhance efficiency while lowering emissions, with estimates suggesting that the introduction of this LNG system could reduce diesel consumption by about 40%. The train has successfully completed over 2,000 km of reliable performance in trials for the modified Driving Power Cars.
The new train consists of eight coaches featuring non-air-conditioned chair car seating and two Driving Power Cars have been modified to accommodate the LNG system. Each tank holds approximately 950-1,000 kg of usable LNG, with the first train commencing its service between Sabarmati and Mahesana Junction.
