India's First LNG Train Hits Tracks in Emissions Reduction Drive
Indian Railways has launched its first train that can run on liquefied natural gas (LNG), marking an effort to reduce emissions. The eight-coach, non-AC DEMU train was flagged off from Sabarmati station in Gujarat and uses a combination of LNG and diesel fuel. Currently, the train operates with 40% LNG and 60% diesel, but dedicated systems for LNG storage, gas-leak detection, and safety have been implemented.
The conversion is aimed at reducing diesel consumption while keeping existing DEMU assets operational. Railways plans to convert 10 Driving Power Cars under an existing contract. Two converted DPCs have already completed 2,000-kilometre field trials each as the organization explores fuel diversification.
