India's Gold Imports Plummet as Silver Demand Soars
India's gold imports plummeted by 57.75% to $2.3 billion in August, according to data from the Ministry of Commerce. This significant drop is a stark contrast to the 127% increase in silver imports, which reached $1.02 billion during the same month.
The largest source of India's gold imports in August was Switzerland, accounting for 40% of shipments, followed by the UAE with over 16%, and South Africa with about 10%. However, total imports from Switzerland still fell 45.4% to $1.28 billion last month.
India is the world's second-largest gold consumer after China, with most of its imports catering to demand from the jewelry industry. Gold imports have significant implications for India's current account deficit, as gold accounts for over 5% of the country's total imports by value.
