India's LNG Imports Surge as Diversified Supplies Offset Qatar Disruptions
India's liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports surged by 15.4% year-on-year to 7.08 million tonnes during May-July, according to a report. This increase helped offset a steep decline in shipments from traditional supplier Qatar.
The country diversified its supplies away from the conflict-hit Strait of Hormuz, relying on higher cargoes from the US, Oman, Nigeria, and Angola. India's LNG imports had fallen by nearly 13% in March-April due to disruptions in supplies routed through the strait.
India prioritized securing supplies to meet demand from sectors including city gas distribution, fertilizers, power, and ceramics. The country relies on LNG imports for about half of its natural gas demand and previously sourced around 60% of these imports through the Strait of Hormuz.
