India's Oil Import Bill Surges by 48% Amid Rising Prices and Shipping Disruptions
India's spending on crude oil imports has surged significantly in recent months. According to data from India's Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell, reported by OilPrice, the country spent $74.8 billion on oil imports between April and August, a whopping 48.4% increase from the same period last year.
The physical volume of imports actually decreased by 0.4%, with India importing 100.7 million tonnes of crude oil during this time frame. However, the average price of the Indian basket of crude oil rose sharply, contributing to the significant jump in spending.
OilPrice attributes the increase in spending to a combination of factors, including a surge in international oil prices and reduced crude flows from the Middle East. Shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz have also added to the costs, with freight rates on the route from Saudi Arabia's Ras Tanura to India increasing by more than 400% since February 28.
