India's Russian Oil Purchases Driven by National Development Needs

Russian Ambassador to India Denis Alipov has clarified that India's increased purchases of Russian crude oil are driven by its own national development needs, not a desire to support Moscow. This statement comes amid continued pressure from Western countries over India's imports of Russian energy.

The US and other Western nations have imposed tariffs on Indian goods due to New Delhi's continued purchase of Russian oil, which increased significantly after 2022 following sanctions and price restrictions on Russian energy exports.

Russia is willing to supply India with the oil it requires, according to Alipov. He criticized Western sanctions and tariffs targeting countries involved in Russian energy trade, saying they have 'taken the path of pressure tactics instead of honest cooperation.'

New Delhi has maintained that its energy sourcing decisions are based on national interest, affordability, and energy security, rather than geopolitical considerations.
