India's sugarcane industry is playing a crucial role in the country's journey towards energy independence. The government has set an ambitious target of achieving 20% ethanol blending (E20) in petrol by the end of the 2025-26 sugar season.

The EBP (Ethanol Blended Petrol) program aims to reduce the burden of high crude oil imports and curb carbon emissions. To achieve this goal, sugarcane juice, syrup, and molasses are being directly supplied to biofuel distilleries from sugar mills.

However, balancing the demand for sugar with the need for ethanol production is a delicate task. The government has implemented policies to ensure that diversion limits are regularly checked so that sugar can be made available all year round at regulated prices.
