India's Wheat Export Prospects Soar as Global Buyers Seek Diversified Sourcing
India's wheat export prospects are gaining momentum as global buyers seek to diversify their sourcing. According to ASSOCHAM, the country can unlock a wheat export opportunity of over USD 1.5 billion due to its record harvest and surplus position.
The report pointed out that India's domestic production has created room to expand exports while meeting food security needs. With the government shifting the export policy for specified wheat varieties from 'Prohibited' to 'Free', India is entering a promising phase in the global wheat trade.
India produced a record 120.7 million tonnes of wheat in 2025-26, retaining its position as the world's second-largest wheat producer. The country has a price advantage in global markets, with its wheat MSP for FY2026-27 equivalent to around USD 268 per tonne compared to an international wheat price of about USD 303 per tonne.
ASSOCHAM noted that long-term success would depend on consistent quality, better logistics, improved storage and testing facilities, and greater clarity in export policies. With a gradual and predictable approach to exports, India can become a more reliable global wheat supplier.
