Dutch Central Bank Transfers 86.4 Tons of Gold from North America
The Dutch central bank, De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB), has quietly transferred a significant amount of gold out of North American vaults to improve its 'crisis readiness' amid global tensions. The DNB moved 86.4 US tons of gold from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York between March and August 2026, with some of it being physically relocated to London.
The transfer, valued at approximately $10.7 billion to $10.9 billion, has altered the global distribution of Dutch gold reserves. Prior to the move, North American vaults held about 50% of DNB's gold reserves, but now London is home to over 32% of its gold.
DNB President Olaf Sleijpen stated that 'we assume we will never need to deploy the gold, but it is necessary to strengthen our resilience and preparedness.' The bank emphasized that this move was not a response to any specific threat but rather a proactive measure to improve crisis readiness.
