Indonesia Prepares 2 Million Hectares for E20 Ethanol Program
Indonesia's government has set its sights on developing two million hectares of sugarcane land for ethanol production to support its national E20 fuel program.
The directive was issued by President Prabowo Subianto during a limited cabinet meeting at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta, where he tasked Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman with securing the land and instructing the Investment Management Agency Danantara to develop the necessary industrial infrastructure.
Sugarcane has been chosen as the primary feedstock over corn and cassava due to its availability across Kalimantan, Sumatra, Java, and Papua, where a total of 2 million hectares will be secured within two years.
The government plans to use existing plantation land for the initiative, with Coordinating Minister for Food Zulkifli Hasan stating that achieving the E20 target is an initial stepping stone toward implementing an E50 fuel blend in the long term.
