Indonesia Prepares for Prolonged Drought as Strong El Nino Threatens LNG Facility

The Indonesian government is taking measures to protect energy facilities from the impact of a strong El Nino. Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia said that El Nino could affect not only agriculture but also various other sectors, including energy.

The Tangguh liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility in West Papua is among those being closely monitored due to nearby forest and peatland fires. The facility has a production capacity of 11.4 million metric tons of LNG per year, accounting for about 35% of Indonesia's total LNG output.

Bahlil noted that several energy facilities in eastern Indonesia have received attention due to dry conditions. He added that the government is also preparing for the possibility that El Nino could last longer than expected.
