Ineos Halts Production Amid UK Gas Price Crisis
UK-based industrial giant Ineos has suspended production at three key plants in Hull due to high gas prices. The firm, owned by billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe, blames the UK's current gas price crisis for its decision.
The company cites that gas prices in the UK are twelve times higher than those in the US and eight times more expensive than coal-based processes used by Chinese competitors. This disparity makes it impossible for Ineos to compete effectively.
Ineos Acetyls, part of the Ineos Group, is the only European producer of key chemicals used in various products such as food, medicines, and explosives. Gas is a critical ingredient in production, which has been severely impacted by the current market conditions.
The decision to suspend production will affect up to 1,000 staff members, with 245 working directly at the site. However, Ineos plans to keep workers on while it explores options such as buying liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the US or waiting for prices to drop.
