Iowa Corn Growers Seek Federal Help with Diesel Prices
The Iowa Corn Growers Association is calling for federal intervention in the diesel market to help alleviate high fuel prices that are affecting farmers. The association's president, Steve Kuiper, said diesel prices have jumped nearly 40 cents per gallon this past week and are now selling at an average of $6.28 a gallon in Iowa.
Kuiper stated that farm fuel is almost exactly twice the price of what they contracted for last November, causing economic and mental stress for farmers who feel like they're 'getting beat up pretty bad.'
The association is asking the Trump Administration to release oil from the country's Strategic Oil Reserve to increase supply and reduce prices. They are also suggesting that IRS rules be waived to allow on-road semis to use tax-exempt dyed diesel without penalty during this year's harvest season.
