Iowa Farmers Suffer as Diesel Prices Soar Amid Iran Conflict
Iowa's corn growers are facing financial stress as they begin harvesting their crops due to high diesel fuel prices. The Iowa Corn Growers Association has written a letter to state congressional delegates, requesting that they help lower the cost of diesel fuel. According to AAA data, average diesel prices in Iowa are $6.27 per gallon, nearly twice as expensive as this time last year.
The conflict in Iran has led to trade disruptions and increased fuel prices. Some Republicans, including Reps. Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Zach Nunn, have voted with Democrats to require congressional approval for continuing the war with Iran. The Iowa Corn Growers Association is asking lawmakers to push the Trump administration to release more oil from the U.S. Strategic Oil Reserve.
Sen. Chuck Grassley has called for an embargo on diesel exports to provide relief for farmers, and President Donald Trump has expressed support for this idea. However, some officials have argued that an export ban won't help lower fuel prices. Rep. Ashley Hinson is also advocating for a pause on diesel exports and suspension of the gas tax.
The Iowa Corn Growers Association's letter also requested that lawmakers investigate legislative mechanisms for waivers to allow farmers to use dyed diesel fuel in on-road vehicles during economic hardships.
