Iowa Farmers Turn to Wind Turbines for Steady Income

Farmers in Iowa have found an unexpected way to diversify their income amid fluctuating crop prices: wind turbines. In 2016, Tim Hemphill, a corn and soybean farmer near Milford, Iowa, reported earning about $20,000 annually from leasing his land to a wind energy company. This steady income provided a buffer during a period of low commodity prices, which made farming increasingly challenging. Unlike crop sales, wind leases offered predictable revenue without requiring additional labor or resources.

The presence of wind turbines did not significantly disrupt farming activities. The infrastructure, including turbine foundations and access roads, occupied only a small portion of the land, allowing Hemphill and other farmers to continue growing crops around the turbines. For example, Kelly Nieuwenhuis, another Iowa farmer, had two turbines on his property while still using the surrounding land for corn and soybean cultivation.

Wind energy has become a vital part of Iowa's electricity supply, accounting for 31% of the state's electricity generation in 2015. This growth has benefited farmers, with 3.5% of Iowa farms receiving energy-related payments averaging over $30,000 annually in 2020. While wind leases are not a replacement for farming, they provide an additional, reliable revenue stream that helps mitigate the financial risks associated with volatile crop markets.
