Iowa Farmers Urge Emergency Action as Diesel Prices Surge Amid Harvest Season
Iowa farmers are facing significant financial and emotional stress due to rising diesel prices. The Iowa Corn Growers Association has sent a letter to the state's congressional delegation, urging them to take emergency measures to lower diesel prices. Diesel fuel costs have surged to $6.52 per gallon nationwide, with Iowa seeing an increase to $6.28 per gallon - 16 cents higher than last week.
Farmer Steve Kuiper expressed concern over the escalating cost of diesel fuel needed to operate trucks, tractors, and combines during the critical harvest period. He highlighted that some days he spends an additional $1,000 on fuel due to the rising costs. Diesel prices have nearly doubled compared with last year, causing a cumulative impact on farmers' expenses.
Kuiper urged lawmakers to take action by lowering fuel taxes and reducing diesel exports to other countries. With all four of Iowa's U.S. House seats and one U.S. Senate seat on the ballot this November, gas prices have become a key issue on the campaign trail.
