Iran Claims Strait of Hormuz Strike Amid Growing Regional Tensions
Iran has claimed to have struck an oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, citing an 'illegal attempt' by the vessel to pass through the waterway. The incident occurred on Thursday night, according to Iran's state broadcaster, which cited the Revolutionary Guard Corps.
The Togo-flagged oil tanker Trend was reportedly targeted by Iranian forces after attempting to transit the strait without authorization. Tehran has asserted control over much of the waterway since the US and Israel launched their war in February.
Separately, another tanker was struck by an 'unknown projectile' on Wednesday while transiting out of the strait, with the crew reported safe. The UK Maritime Trade Operations warned that vessels attempting to pass through the strait without authorization would face 'destruction.'
