Iran Claims Strike on Togo-Flagged Oil Tanker in Strait of Hormuz
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in Iran has claimed to have struck and detained a Togo-flagged oil tanker, the Trend, in the Strait of Hormuz. According to the IRGC, the vessel attempted an 'illegal passage' through the strategic waterway and was subsequently targeted.
The incident comes as maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remains sharply reduced due to ongoing regional conflict. Preliminary data showed that only four commodity vessels transited the waterway on Thursday, compared with a 10-day average of 16.
Separately, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported a security incident in the Strait of Hormuz, but did not identify the vessel involved. It remains unclear whether this report concerns the same tanker mentioned by Iran.
