Iran Claims to Strike Oil Tanker in Strait of Hormuz Amid Escalating Tensions
Tensions in the Middle East escalated on September 18 as Iran's Revolutionary Guards claimed to have struck an oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway that connects major oil-producing countries with global markets.
The incident occurred late on Thursday, when the Togo-flagged oil tanker Trend had a fire break out on board. The IRGC stated that the ship was attempting 'illegal passage' and was targeted as a result.
A British maritime agency also reported an attack, stating that a ship was hit by an 'unknown projectile', causing a fire that was later extinguished.
