Iran Clerical Regime Teeters on Brink as Fuel Shortages Spark Widespread Protests

The clerical regime in Iran is facing a severe crisis of economic and political paralysis. The government's attempt to introduce a fuel scheme pricing gasoline at a refinery-cost rate of 87,200 tomans per liter backfired when it was met with immediate public hostility on August 13, 2026. The regime's president, Masoud Pezeshkian, acknowledged the crisis on August 8, 2026, stating that a U.S. naval blockade has cut off vital import routes and left the government without the financial reserves needed to procure foreign fuel.

The external pressure is exacerbated by an acute structural energy deficit in Iran. The country's refineries produce fuel with an octane rating near 85, ten units below required standards, making it impossible to meet demand. With daily national consumption reaching 129 million liters and domestic production capacity standing at just 115 million liters, the state faces a daily deficit of 14 million liters.

The situation has led to widespread civil strain, with public anger boiling over in heat-stricken southern hubs like Bushehr and Hormozgan. The state-aligned newspaper Sobh-e Sahel reported that despite local prosecutors removing refueling limits and doubling free-card allowances, kilometer-long queues continue to immobilize cities.

The crisis has also ignited severe factional warfare inside the ruling apparatus, with a parliamentary declaration signed by a majority of lawmakers warning Pezeshkian against further fuel shock policies. The state publication Tejarat News reported that Iran's Misery Index, combining unemployment and point-to-point inflation, surpassed 100% across 19 provinces, reaching a national average of 96% in July 2026.
