Iran Conflict Fuels Oil Price Surge, Boosts EV Demand and Battery Metals
The ongoing conflict involving Iran has caused a surge in oil prices, which in turn is accelerating demand for electric vehicles (EVs) and the metals required for their batteries. Brent crude has risen to approximately $102 per barrel, reflecting the geopolitical tensions and market volatility.
This increase in oil prices coincides with elevated sales of EVs, particularly in Europe, where a 36% year-over-year rise was seen in August. The heightened demand for EVs is driving up the need for battery metals such as lithium, nickel, and copper, whose spot prices are also seeing upward pressure.
The current geopolitical climate and its impact on oil supply and demand dynamics are central to market expectations, with prediction markets suggesting a low probability of crude oil reaching a new all-time high by September 30. However, the market for December 31 shows a more optimistic 12% YES probability, implying that market participants expect potential catalysts in the coming months.
