Iran Conflict Sends Gas Prices Soaring in South Carolina
Gas prices have skyrocketed in South Carolina over the past year, increasing by roughly 45% since last year's average of $2.83 per gallon. The current average price for regular fuel is $4.06 per gallon as of Tuesday, according to AAA.
The surge in gas prices can be attributed to the ongoing conflict with Iran, which has restricted cargo transit through the Strait of Hormuz, a key oil shipping route. This has led to higher prices at the pump, affecting not only commuters but also local businesses and farmers who rely on diesel fuel for their operations.
Clemson students and locals are feeling the pinch as they struggle to afford gas for their daily needs. Katelyn Biddison, a junior marketing major, said that 'all my money goes towards a tank of gas.'
Eric Jenkins Jr., a junior industrial engineering major, expressed concern about the impact on blue-collar workers, such as truckers and farmers, who are hit hard by the high prices. Lee Haddon, a local cattle rancher and Clemson alumnus, noted that the increased cost of diesel fuel has added $1.50 to $2.00 per round bale during the haying process.
