Iran Crisis Takes Financial Toll as Oil Prices Surge
The recent escalation in tensions between Iran and other Gulf states has led to concerns about global energy supplies. The planned meeting between Iran and its neighbors on September 14 was postponed, while attacks on Saudi Arabia's east-west pipeline and a projectile strike in the Strait of Hormuz deepened the crisis.
The shutdown of the pipeline, which is over 1,200 kilometers long, has pushed oil prices up by more than 3%. The incident in Hormuz highlights the vulnerability of both the main waterway and its alternative route.
The US Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control imposed sanctions on a network operating between the Gulf and Asia, accusing it of helping Iran's shadow banking system move hundreds of millions of dollars illicitly. This campaign is seen as an attempt to close the gaps in the sanctions architecture.
