Iran Demands US Compensation for Strait of Hormuz Deal
A deal between Iran and Oman on control of the Strait of Hormuz is close, but Tehran says it won't be enough to reopen the waterway without US compensation. The agreement would allow normal oil traffic to resume in the strategic trade route, which carries a fifth of the world's oil and gas shipments.
The Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said that Iran and Oman are 'very close' to an agreement on a new shipping route through the strait, but reopening it depends on other conditions. He stated that the previous traffic separation scheme is no longer acceptable to Tehran.
The UAE reported that Iran had attacked one of its state oil company's carriers with a missile as it transited the Strait of Hormuz, with no injuries reported. Iranian media quoted the UAE report without including the part where they blamed Iran for the attack.
