A recent escalation in the Middle East has sent oil prices spiking after Iran fired a barrage of missiles at US forces in Jordan, prompting the US and Saudi Arabia to strike Tehran-backed militias in Iraq.

The incident began when Jordan's military intercepted five Iranian ballistic missiles aimed at the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base and the headquarters of the US military's Central Command. No casualties or damage were reported from the intercepts.

As a result, the US and Saudi Arabia retaliated with airstrikes against multiple logistics and weapons sites in eastern Iraq, killing at least 20 fighters and wounding 32 others.

The strikes also drew condemnation from the Iraqi government, which called them an 'unacceptable attack' that targeted its security institutions.
